"A different kind of storm"

model.gif (48249 bytes) The first signs of a winter storm appeared on the 9 day mrf. Unfortunately I did not save it but you can have a good look at the 48 hour ;).
twn2.jpg (43362 bytes) EC was quick to put out heavy snow fall warnings.
twn1.jpg (37869 bytes) Oh that looks good to me, although most people probably have their mouth hanging open. lol
twn3.jpg (33170 bytes) Hmmm.... looks like I am in there
snowstarting.jpg (23023 bytes) The storm finally starts in midtown Toronto at 9:30. Heavy snow is followed by a snow sleet mix and then entirely sleet. Not much happens after and the snow/sleet tapers of by 1:30.
wsi_rad.gif (57346 bytes) The radar looked fairly interesting.
sleet.jpg (33121 bytes) As I was heading home, the snow which had been falling all day changed to a entirely sleet mix around 4PM and a couple centimeters actually accumulated as seen in the image.
sleet2.jpg (14021 bytes) The sleet continued to fall and was quickly accumulating on the road. It was actually accumulating much faster than snow does and was not nearly as fragile so the trafic was not mushing it up.
snowyroad2.jpg (28221 bytes) The sleet changed back to snow shortly after I got home some time around 4:20PM and it began to pick up in intensity.
snowfalling.jpg (36557 bytes) The snow started to really begin to accumulate by 7:30PM
snowfalling3.jpg (18666 bytes) By 8PM about 22cm or so lay on the ground as the heavy bands really started to line up and stream across my area. In the picture you can see about 22cm on the ground, 15cm on the pots and 10cm on the table. For some reason the closer one is to the back of the house the lesser the amounts. There was only 2cm on the step out the back door LOL...
snowfalling4.jpg (14603 bytes) This photo was taken at just after 8PM. Compare it to the one below 10min later.
snowfalling2.jpg (14103 bytes) The photo was taken at 8:10PM. The snow was very heavy at the time. You can actually tell by the amount of light pollution and the fact that all the tire marks on the road have disappeared. This image was taken using a 1.8 second exp.
after_beforesun2.jpg (28126 bytes) The next morning...
snowpile2.jpg (24482 bytes) Almost 30cm had fallen. Clearly it was a good idea not to directly drive out of the driveway into the snow LOL.
car_coverd.jpg (34163 bytes) Our neighbor shoveled about 4 times before he gave up late Tuesday night (I think he gave up sometime around 11:30 LOL) and it was a good idea that he did. However he did save himself the trouble of having to shovel the entire 30cm as I had to and only shovel about 5. His 3 sons are actually pretty smart guys, they decided to reverses up and down the driveway early yesterday to smush all the snow in the hopes it would melt LOL. To bad it did not work.
snowpile.jpg (21413 bytes) Gotta love snow!
after3.jpg (34843 bytes) Hmm now you look at it, seems like the 30cm I recorded was probably snow that blew off my roof and onto what had already fallen adding to it. Ok ok, 30 at my house and 25 or more on the street in front.
after4.jpg (21993 bytes) Next time I remember to take a picture of what I measure I should remember to do it before I shovel and early in the morning before the snow starts to melt. Well it still gives you a idea. The snow pile here was the smallest of all and only maybe 5cm higher than what fell. Just ignore that peak directly behind the ruler which is 5cm higher. Use the top of the mound in the right of the picture to get a good idea of what the depth was when I measured in the morning.
