August 19th 2005 - Supercell Radar Analysis

*All data is level 2 data from the NWS KBUF radar site, all images showing reflectivity and velocity are from the 0.4 degree tilt level unless otherwise specified.

initial1.png (161187 bytes)
16:00 - Storms initially form, progress east. Uncorrolated rotation in sections.
initial2.png (333580 bytes)
16:31 - Storm intensified south of Listowel, rotation begins to steadily develop however remains very disorganized at best.
1730bv.png (103827 bytes)
17:30 - Meso develops west of Fergus.
1730db.png (92037 bytes)
17:30 - BR reveals strong inflow slot to the west of precip core under meso, note northern notch starting to wrap around back towards the NW.
1748bv.png (72049 bytes)
17:48 - Meso and TVS signature present.
1748db.png (56000 bytes)
17:48 - Anything at this time is highly rain wrapped, note precip wrapping around in continuity from previous BR image.
1756db.png (68342 bytes)
17:56 - Hook like structure over and east of lake.
1756dbsmooth.png (233742 bytes)
Smoothing clearly reveals this hook.
1756bv.png (79501 bytes)
17:56 - Meso/TVS indicative of
1832bv.png (143407 bytes)
18:32 - Meso redevelops
1832db.png (133741 bytes)
18:32 BR
1832db_smooth.png (375792 bytes)
18:32
1841bv.png (136762 bytes)
18:41 - Meso cranking west of Brampton
1841bv_zoom.png (65715 bytes)
18:41 - Zoom of meso/shear couplet
1841_3_1degree_bwer.png (135754 bytes)
18:41 - BWER at 3.1 degrees
1841_4_1degree_bwer.png (123196 bytes)
18:41 - BWER at 4.1 degrees indicating extremely intense updraft. Note the BWER extended beyond the vertical range of the radar.
1903_hookdb.png (141986 bytes)
19:03 - Storm hooking over GTA, note the
1903_hookdb_smooth.png (393050 bytes)
1903_hookbv.png (155215 bytes)
19:03 - Meso visible just NW of CYYZ
1907_hookbv.png (155217 bytes)
19:07 - Meso directly over/slightly to north of CYYZ.
1907_hookdb.png (141686 bytes)
19:07 - BR reveals hook wrapping up and the meso occluding.
1907_hookdbsmooth.png (392845 bytes)
Smoothing intensifies the hooks visibility.
1916_hookwrap.png (139881 bytes)
19:16 - Meso has occluded on lowest tilt, note weaker DBZ directly over airport surrounded by higher reflectivity.
1943_hook2_db.png (134750 bytes)
19:43 - Hook reforming, note swath of very high/extreme reflectivity to the north.
1943_hook2_db_smooth.png (382537 bytes)
19:43 - Smoothing reveals structure.
1943_hook2_bv.png (148344 bytes)
19:43 - I am running out of things to say which make me sound smart, note where meso is and note how the DBZ wraps.
1947_smooth.png (415924 bytes)
19:47 - New hook begins to occlude and storms looses intensity after this but does not drop below severe limits at any time. Note secondary hook like feature north of CYYZ.
