Types of Winter Weather

Winter Storm - Any storm which produces snow, ice pellets, freezing rain or other forms of winter precipitation, it is a generic term mainly used by weather agencies to classify entire storm systems during the winter season.

Snow Storm - A generic term referring to any macroscale or mesoscale storm which produces snow as the primary form of precipitation.

Snow squall - A very intense mesoscale snowstorm often associated with whiteout or blizzard like conditions, snow squalls can either form from cold air passing over a warmer body of water or along cold fronts/trof waves which accumulate moisture as they travel.

Lake Effect Snow - Snow which is produced directly as a result of cold air passing over warm water (also called Ocean effect snow).

Lake Enhanced Snow - Snow which is already present but enhanced (intensified) due to lake moisture being present.
